In December 2007, Midvale Heights and Westmorland were jointly awarded a grant from the City of Madison Department of Planning and Development to develop a joint neighborhood plan. This plan lays out a 10-year vision for the future of the neighborhoods—focusing on both preserving attractive elements in the neighborhoods and recommending desirable improvements. A Joint Steering Committee, which includes members from each neighborhood, is spearheading this process.
Current Project Timeline:
- April 2008—Vierbicher Associates selected via a competitive process to develop the neighborhood plan
- May 2008—Preparation of Existing Conditions report
- May 2008—Stakeholder interviews
- July 2008—First public meeting to gather neighborhood input about traffic and transportation, quality of life, land use, urban design, and parks and open space
- July 2008—Focus group interviews with parents of young children, local business owners, neighborhood gardeners, new neighborhood residents
- July - September 2008—Preparation of draft neighborhood plan recommendations
- September 2008—Second public meeting to gather neighborhood input on draft plan goals and recommendations
- October - December 2008—Development of detailed goals and recommendations
- March 2009—Final public meeting to present neighborhood plan
- March - June 2009—Presentation of neighborhood plan to city departments and Common Council for approval
- June 2009 - 2019—Work on plan recommendations
